love has no end

i came back from new york a week ago and had an amazing time. the highlight was seeing Ghada Amer's show Love Has No End, at the Brooklyn Museum.

this survey of 50 or so pieces cover the last twenty years of her career. her pieces varied from her better known pornographic embroidered paintings, to staged tourist style photographs in paris of veiled women, to her wallpaper installation "Reign of Terror" where various definitions for terrorism are printed into the pink, green, and yellow wallpaper design. we only had a few hours to check out the museum and then we had to head back to the city to meet with ghada.

she was so welcoming, very funny, and easy going. i don't know why i think all big name artists are full of themselves, but she chatted politics and art like she was an old friend. she made us tea and gave us the grand house tour which was an amazing restoration project that had my mouth dragging on the inlaid wood floors. ghada grew up in cairo until she was 11 then moved to france, but her family still resides in egypt. deb and i traveled to egypt in may of 2007 and had quite a bit of familiarity with the country, its culture, and our experience of being western women. listening to ghada's insght about prostitution, sexual repression, and the overall fear that is perpetuated in egypt was enlightening to say the least and it also made the content  of her work all the more poignant.

the brooklynm musem has a flickr site with photos of her installation, you can view them here.
