no sleep til brooklyn!

oh my, only a short day away before i leave for new york with deb. i am super excited to find some new Berne Mev shoes and head to the Brooklyn Musem to see Ghada Amers exhibition Love Has No End . i've never been to the second largest museum in new york and look forward to checking out their permanent collection along with an exhibit on modern jewelry, japonisme in american graphic art, and some egyptian art. i had the wonderful opportunity to travel to Egypt in may of 07 and earlier this year worked with 4th generation printmaker Ayomi Yoshida, so japan and egypt hold dear places in my heart. Ghada was born in Cairo and is an internationally shown artist. her work  portrays imagery of women from porn mags that have been repetitively embroidered on canvas with long hanging threads. the work can look abstract at first glance, but upon closer inspection reveal women pleasuring themselves or insuggestive poses. her work definitely celebrates women and turns its nose up against the submission of women in both western and islamic cultures.

i am looking forward to seeing some of her new antiwar pieces and collaborations with Reza Farkhondeh whom she shares a studio with. deb and i get to spend Sunday with her, check out her house, visit her studio, and share a meal. Ghada came to grand rapids as a visiting artist and really hit it off with deb. they laughed together like they'd known each other for years. Ghada had extended an invitation to us to visit her anytime we were in New York and we really wanted to make an effort to see her show before it ended. she lives in new york and this is the first time she has shown there. what an adventure we'll have.
